Adhering to the designer,William Lyons' maxim of "Grace, Pace and Space", the Mark II was a beautiful, fast and capable saloon car. It came with either a 2.4ltr, 3.4ltr or 3.8ltr XK six-cylinder engineThe 2.4ltr was fitted with twin Solexes carburators, three were fitted on US spec cars in order to meet SMOG emission legislation. As is often the case this did reduce performance over the equivalent SU carburated examples.

The Mark II gained a reputation for transcending the borders of class and breeding in the 1960s, breaking down barriers in the name of good taste, owned by city bankers and bank robbers alike. The MKII specifically gained a reputation as a capable car for bank raids, being fast,  roomy enough for five adults as well as having a large boot!

The Jaguar MK II was raced successfully in the European Touring Car Championship, until the Ford Falcon convincingly outperformed it.

Mk II Jaguars were used as Police patrol cars, especially on the UK motorways, which in the 1960's had no speed limit. The Police frequently upgraded the 3.8ltr engines with the XKE inlet manifold and triple SU carburators.

The Mk II Jaguar is well known as the car driven by fictional TV detective Inspector Morse played by the late John Thaw. Morse's car was the 2.4ltr version with steel wheels and everflex roof. In November 2005, the car used in the television series sold for more than £100,000 once it had been restored from its rather scruffy condition. It was often pushed into scenes with engine noises dubbed onto the soundtrack in post production.

Mk II Jaguars pleasingly photogenic lines have resulted in numerous appearances on television shows such as "The Cathrine Tate show", "The Royal", Miss Marples "The Mirror Cracked" as well as on the big screenin films such as the 1971 film "VIllian" starring Richard Burton, "The great St. Trinians Train Robbery" and "The Sucker" 1964.
